This is a sad story about my poor pet turtle Speedy.
I got Speedy back in 2009 during Christmas break while I was visiting the Flea Market with my dad in Ft. Lauderdale during Christmas break. We passed by the pet section and I saw they were selling little turtles. I begged my dad for $15 to get a pet turtle. He eventually gave in and I picked one. I named him Speedy. He was very energetic and kept crawling out of his little plastic bowl if I wasn’t looking. We bought some turtle food pellets and put him in a box for the 4 hour drive back to Tampa.
Once we got back I felt like Speedy deserved a nicer residence than a little pink turtle bowl that only held like 6oz of water. So I asked for a bigger fish tank. Of course the answer was “no”. I tried to convince my parents that this fish tank was a bare necessity if we actually expected Speedy to live a long happy life. Their answer was still “NO”. So a week later my dad found out one of his Firemen co-workers was getting rid of a tank and would give it to us for the FREE. We took it cleaned it out, put water, rocks, water filter and lighting lamp in and on top of the tank. Speedy seemed to love it.
After a few days Speedy stopped eating and eventually stopped walking around. The most he would do was lift up his head when I touched him . His skin began to get scaly and and his shell began to peel. I could only think of one solution.
HE HAD TO GO BACK TO HIS NATURAL HABITAT
There was a pond in my neighborhood that I thought it would be a great new home for Speedy so I picked him up walked about a mile to the pond. When I got there I froze, all I could think about were Alligator stories and how pet dogs and people have been attacked randomly around ponds all over America. Clearly there shouldn’t have been any alligators in that pond but just in case I kept a good distance. I held Speedy over my head and hurled him towards the pond.
I didn’t throw him far enough. I ran picked him up and gave him a little toss into the pond. That was the last time I saw Speedy.
